Key Stage 1 Curriculum

In Key Stage 1 we build on the expertise and the good basis of the Foundation Stage. Play-based activities still feature but are increasingly phased out during Year 1, completing the transition to a more formal curriculum. In Years 1 and 2, the children broadly follow the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum, adapted and enhanced in order to provide a purposeful curriculum. Our aim is to provide Key Stage 1 children with a positive and happy experience and develop them into independent learners.

The children have daily phonics, literacy, guided reading and maths sessions. Teachers tailor these sessions to the needs of the individual child to enable every child to make outstanding progress. Other subjects are taught termly through our creative topics, where our key aspirational academy values have been used to develop a progressive and meaningful curriculum for the children as they move through Key Stage 1. Children find these topics both exciting and enjoyable and they are the driving force, providing us with questions that they would like to find out. This allows our pupils to take responsibility for their learning and become curious learners. Below are the overviews of topics for the year:

Year 1 Overview 2017-2018

Year 2 Overview 2017-2018

Key Stage 1 children follow these phonics and reading schemes:
Phonics – Read Write Inc.is our main phonics scheme.
Reading books are sent home weekly from a selection of reading schemes: Oxford Reading Tree, Songbirds, Floppy Phonics, Bug Club and Project X.

Our committed and highly skilled team of staff in Key Stage 1 provide a number of intervention programmes and small group work for those children who require additional time to reinforce learning and to stretch those who benefit from greater challenges. Our Key Stage 1 children thrive in a happy, stimulating and nurturing environment which enables them to feel valued, secure and confident and ready to then move into Key Stage 2.
