Term 3
We will be publishing what we are learning during each term throughout the year. Watch this space to see what is happening in Term 3 in and out of the classroom and for useful information for Hazel and Holly classes.
Hospitals and People who help us
Year 1 have fully embraced this term’s topic of Hospitals and people who help us. The children have looked at how hospitals have changed over time, had chance to role play being a patient and a doctor in our topic area as well as learning about why Florence Nightingale is a significant person.
In Literacy the children have explored the difference between fiction and non – fiction books as well as some of the features of a non – fiction text such as fact writing and labelling diagrams. We are going to use these skills to write fact files about Florence Nightingale and other people who help us in the community.
Meeting our firefighting heroes
Year 1 had a great surprise today when the firefighters visited with their fire engine. They learnt all about what to do in a fire and the equipment the firefighters wore when working. They also looked inside the fire engine, saw all the equipment they carried and learnt that they did more than just fight fires and rescue cats from trees. They had a lovely time and were so excited, asking lots of questions as well as listening carefully.
Holly Class Homework Projects
Year one children in Holly Class produced some lovely work for their homework projects. We had a range of subjects from invented heroes and their colourful masks, to Florence Nightingale lamps, to charts to show seasonal weather changes, with clothing that would be best to wear in the different conditions, and much, much more.
Here’s a small selection of the children’s projects.
Our Medical Heroes
The children in Year 1 have received a special delivery! They had to be very careful unpacking the items, as some were fragile and delicate. In the package was a nurse’s uniform with equipment attached, a doctor’s and paramedic’s uniform and a doctor’s bag full of equipment. The children investigated the package; their teachers were amazed by the knowledge the children knew about nurses, doctors and the equipment these heroes use. The children are so excited to learn more this term about people who help us, in particular nurses!
