Year 5 & 6 Girls’ Football

girls football

A huge congratulations to our Y5+6 girls football team who attended an event at Wykham Park to compete against other local schools. They played incredibly well as a team and finished joint first whilst not conceding a single goal!

The intent of this event was to develop sport specific skills and the progress that the children made was really evident across the morning. The focus school games value was RESPECT. The children really took this on board, demonstrating excellent behaviour and manners, it was especially lovely to see the children enjoying running under the respect tunnels at the end of the matches.

Year 6 Document what life was like for children in WWII

Year 6 have continued to delve deeper into their WWII unit and have been looking at interesting topics such as the use propaganda, the Blitz, evacuation and Hitler Youth. They have also been putting themselves in the shoes of children during the war to write impactful setting descriptions using emotive language and creating TASC wheel projects to answer our driving question – How can we document what life was like for children in WWII?

During maths, they have been working on understanding ratio and scaling and using this knowledge to solve problems.

year 6 WWII

Digging into history and world war ii

Year 6 have had an exciting start to the term and have loved learning all about World War II. They have been looking at which countries were involved, who the key figures were on both sides and where WWII fits in on a timeline with other history units that they have studied throughout their time at Dashwood. This theme has tied into their literacy work where they have been looking at famous speeches, what makes an effective speech and writing and performing their own informative speeches about rationing.

In maths they have continued working on fractions, decimals and percentages. They have been learning how to find percentages of amounts and ordering mixed fractions, decimals and percentages. Year 6 have also had a continued focus on arithmetic, practicing these skills regularly is important at this point in the year.

Mentoring

In addition, we had a great time in our first mentoring session and leading activities for our mentees. Being role models for younger pupils in the school is helping us to build our confidence and leadership skills whilst supporting other members of our school.
